NetSquared Surrey is a community-driven nonprofit technology meetup and we welcome everyone who wants to use their tech skills for good or who wants to learn how they can use online tools to help tell their stories, fundraise, and change the world.

Connecting offline and online events: Twestival case study

From the early days of social media, it has been used for social good. The ease and (often) free price tag of the medium combined with its potential reach is extremely valuable. When Rebecca first started her blogging career she used her voice (which was very small) to promote causes and run fundraisers like Blogathon (a 24-hour blogging marathon with pledges). Eventually Rebecca took her efforts offline and into events where real people, not just avatars and screen names, could gather to support a cause. The best example of this is Twestival, which united cities around the world to support local and global causes purely by promoting an event through Twitter. Twestival has been re-launched this year with a new format but Rebecca will be taking a look back at what made it so successful and how they’re changing up the model to make an even bigger global impact.

Winning the Mobile Revolution

Today, it’s likely that at least 20% of your website traffic comes
from mobile devices That number is rapidly increasing. So too is the
diversity of devices people are using to access your site. Today it’s
mostly smartphones and tablets, but in a few years visitors will be
visiting your site through their glasses or on wall-sized displays.
This session will decode that future, and provide valuable insights
into how the mobile revolution impacts your marketing and
communications activities. Attendees will leave with ideas and tips
they can implement immediately to improve their organization’s
mobile-readiness.
